Small Animal Services
We Offer a Wide Range of Pet Care Services

Dental care:
Taking care of your dog’s teeth can do more than just freshen his breath – it can improve his quality of life.
Dental health problems are very common in cats and dogs and usually start with a build-up of sticky plaque that hardens to form tartar. This leads to gingivitis and periodontal diseases. This infection may affect other organs in the body. Dental diseases are treatable. Ask your vet for a complete oral check-up and schedule regular dental cleanings

Internal and external parasites:
External parasites include ticks, fleas, lice and mites while internal parasites include intestinal worms like roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm and parasites like Giardia and Coccidia.
When you think of fleas, you probably associate them with your pet. Fleas generally live on dogs, cats, other warm-blooded animals and birds because their fur and feathers make it easy to hide and reproduce. But fleas can also bite you, the pet owner. Treating your pets all year round for ticks and fleas is important. Ticks and fleas are present all year round, not just in the warmer months. Not only do your pets need to be treated but so does their environment and sleeping spaces. Regular de-worming and external parasite control is important to keep your pets and you safe and healthy.

Sterilisations:
Neutering is by far the best thing you can do for your puppy. Here’s why:
If you’re the proud owner of a female puppy, spaying can reduce her chances of developing breast, uterine and ovarian cancer. It also lessens the likelihood of uterine infections and prevent unplanned pregnancies.
If you have a male puppy, you should know that neutering will prevent testicular tumours and prevent prostate problems. It also reduces the possibility of perennial tumours and hernias.
The benefit to you and your family of having your puppy neutered is that you never have to deal with unwanted litters. Neutered males are less aggressive, less distracted by females in heat and less likely to mark their territory with urine and less likely to mount your leg or furniture.
Spaying a female puppy will stop stray males from camping in your garden and decrease her desire to roam.
The dedicated team at Kowie Vet will be with you and your beloved pet every step of the way to answer any questions or concerns, both before and after surgery.

Nutrition:
Good nutrition is very important for healthy growth and to maintain a healthy body. Keeping them slim and active is one of the most important things you can do for your pet. Animals are prone to the same weight related health risks as humans. Diabetes, arthritis, cancer, high blood pressure and fatigue could all be related to excess weight.
Currently 56% of dogs and 60% of cats are classified as overweight, but only 10% of pet parents realise that their pets are overweight. Kowie vet will be able to help with weight charts, body fat index analysis, choosing the correct diet for your pet and helping pets with health conditions to make the correct diet choices.

Microchip:
Identification and traceability are important parts of responsible pet ownership. A Microchip provides permanent identification for your pet and gives them the best chance of being reunited with you, should they happen to go missing. Virtually any pet can be fitted with an identity microchip, including dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, snakes, parrots, fish and even tortoises!
Every year, thousands of pets are reunited with their owners because they have been micro chipped. They can be scanned by veterinarians to retrieve contact information from a registry.

Emergency care:
Emergencies unfortunately happen at any time of the day or night and we understand how important your pet is to you. We are not open 24/7, but do have one of our veterinarians available on-call at all times to attend to such emergencies.

Surgery:
We offer a wide range of routine and emergency surgeries including soft tissue surgery, orthopaedics and oncology.

Vaccinations:
Regular vaccinations can prevent serious diseases like parvo, rabies, feline leukaemia or leptospirosis. Prevention also keeps veterinary bills manageable by reducing the need for expensive emergency treatments.
This begins with a series of puppy or kitten vaccinations followed by an annual booster. Pets are companions, often seen as family members and preventing illness helps them live longer, healthier lives. The Kowie vet follows the Small Animal World Veterinary Association guidelines on core vaccinations to make sure that all animals are safe and protected. Feel free to discuss vaccination protocols with one of our veterinarians.

In House laboratory / bloodwork:
Our in-house laboratory allows for rapid and accurate testing, helping us diagnose and treat your pet efficiently. While every effort is made to ensure precise results, some cases may require further external testing or specialist referral. Please note that bloodwork results are interpreted in conjunction with clinical signs, and follow-up may be recommended based on your pet’s condition. We are committed to providing timely, professional care at every step.

Imaging: Radiographs, Ultrasound and Endocopy
Our advanced imaging services help us investigate internal conditions with minimal stress to your pet. While radiographs, ultrasound, and endoscopy offer valuable insights, they are part of a broader diagnostic process. In some cases, further testing or specialist referral may be required to confirm a diagnosis. We aim to provide clear, accurate assessments to support the best possible care for your animal companion.

Senior Pets:
As your dog or cat grows older, they’ll experience many changes from greying hair to loss of mobility and vision, hearing changes, behavioural changes, weight changes, dental issues and they will be more susceptible to medical issues. While some changes may be more noticeable than others, it’s important to be aware of everything that you can expect for your ageing friend. Here at the Kowie vet we do senior dog screening to identify and manage age-related health issues early.

Pet insurance:
Owning a pet comes with a responsibility to them and their wellbeing. We can assist you with information about Pet insurance options and claims.
